‘We responded promptly’ – metro

The flooded sub-basement of the Meyer Street building which is home to a number of SAPS units.

After a water pipe burst in Odendaal Street in the Germiston CBD, recently, flooding the SAPS building in Meyer Street (GCN, April 21) and causing huge problems for the SAPS units housed there, the metro finally gave the GCN comment on the matter.

The flooding also caused an electricity outage and the police units had to close up shop, as they could not work in the building.

The metro did not respond to the situation urgently and the water was left to pour into the building unabated for hours.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro said, “According to our records the department received a service request at about 10.30am and immediately dispatched a response team.”

Capt Barry Botha from the Hawks Head Office Gauteng told the GCN that he had reported the burst pipe before 7am.

But when the GCN arrived at the site at about 10.30am there was no team from the metro in sight and, in fact, when the GCN sent the metro a follow-up email at 11.20am with more information about the problem, a team had still not arrived.

“It was found that the basement was flooded due to a water leak on the pavement,” Gadebe said.

“The leak was repaired immediately and the excess water in the basement was pumped out during the night.

“We, therefore, cannot confirm the extent of the damage and the items that were affected.

“All our departments responded promptly to the urgent request received.”
