Fire teams deal with Interwaste fire quickly

A fire broke out in one of the facilities at the Interwaste Transfer Station in Industries East, at about 5.30am, this morning (Saturday).

While the cause of the fire is unknown, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) and the Interwaste fire response team managed the incident.

“This is a general waste facility and poses no threat to the immediate environment,” said Leon Grobblaar, facilities director at Interwaste.

“The fire was contained and operations will resume, as per normal, on Monday morning.

“A full investigation will be undertaken into the cause of the fire, and based on the outcome, appropriate action taken.

“I thank our team, DEMS and the metro for their quick response to this incident, ensuring it was contained and managed as rapidly as possible.

“We will share more information, we deem pertinent and relevant.”
