Women the focal point of event

Women were given female condoms, among other things, upon entry to the event. Nondwe Magkobola (left) and Violet Sithole helped hand out the condoms.

Women gathered at the Germiston City Hall for the ‘Young Women in Dialogue’ event, recently.

The spotlight was on the topic, feminism.

Young women from different walks of life were seen chatting about the challenges they experience in various environments in their quest to realise gender equality by 2030, under the theme ‘Thinking and Re-thinking Feminism’.

Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Clr Dora Mlambo, offered a few words of encouragement during her speech.

“Very few things are as inspiring as being in a room full of young women because I see myself in all of you,” said Mlambo.

“As young women in a society that damns us to subjugation, humiliation and even desperation, do we really have a choice but to take on ideas that assert us as women in this world that wants to reduce us to nothing?

“We have gathered to discuss, to find solutions, to build solidarity, network and celebrate our strength.”

The speakers of the day shared the same sentiment, namely that education has the power to elevate a person to places never imagined.

Gugu Ndima, spokesperson of the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, said: “We need to read and empower ourselves and lead by example.”

The audience had a chance to express their ideas during the question and answer sessions.

Strong connections were made as the women mingled and networked after the event.
