Action at local derby

Mustangs Rugby League Club’s JP Loots (left) and Bosjan du Preez tackle Spartans Rugby League Club player, Sheldon van der Westhuizen.

The Mustangs and Spartans Rugby League Clubs took to the field at the Elspark Sports Grounds on Saturday.

Both clubs are from Elspark which created some local derby action.

Spartans had a good start and took total control early in the game, but failed to sustain it.

This enabled their local rivals to turn the tables and take the lead.

It was an action-packed match as both teams fought for dominance but Mustangs proved to be stronger and their dominance was well rewarded with a 52-30 win.

“We had a good start but Mustangs came back stronger and were more powerful,” said Spartans’ coach, Johan Janse van Vuuren.

“We seemed to pick up in the dying minutes but it was a little too late.”

Mustang’s try scorers were Damian Diedericks, Peter Scheepers, Pieter Hanekom, Anton van Deventer and Basjan Du Preez.

Both teams will have home games this Saturday.
