The top five stories on www.germistoncitynews.co.za for the week, January 13 to 19, were:

1. Germiston FC search for players

Training is in full swing at the Germiston City Football Club and the club is looking forward to the new season. With the new winter football season set to kick-off in March, the club held trials last weekend, January 20 and 21, at the Germiston City Sports Club in Vimy Ridge Road in Delville.

2. Mayor of Ekurhuleni urged to step down

The Ekurhuleni mayor and ANC regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina found himself in hot water following the election of Cyril Ramaphosa as the new ANC president. Masina, who is allegedly a staunch supporter of President Jacob Zuma, was in full support of Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma during the election of the new ANC president. He was quoted in a number of newspapers saying he would resign as mayor and remain an ordinary member of the ANC and as councillor if Ramaphosa won.

3. Suspects flee from EMPD, abandon vehicle

EMPD Public Order Policing (Pops) Unit members, who were patrolling in Vosloorus near Chris Hani Mall recently, noticed a white Ford Figo with four suspicious-looking suspects. After indicating to the driver that he should stop, the driver decided instead to accelerate and speed away. A high-speed chase ensued and the four occupants eventually abandoned the vehicle in Spruitview and fled on foot.

4. Be prepared for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and hot weather – says SA Weather Service

The South African Weather Service asked residents to be prepared for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and hot weather, recently. Motorists were reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling in wet weather and were encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances.

5. Power outages continue to plague residents

According to a recent parliamentary question, the Sunnyridge and Marlands areas have been subject to 118 power outages within a period of 24 months. This period is for the financial years of 2015/16 and 2016/17, from April 1, 2015, to March 31, 2017, and excludes the recent crippling outages experienced in the area.
