Rhodes Avenue drain blockage causes flooding

The stormwater drain in Rhodes Avenue, in Parkhill Gardens, is filled with sand, rocks and leaves which prevent it from draining water from the street when it rains.

When it rains in the city the residents of Rhodes Avenue in Parkhill Gardens know they will have to paddle across the road and their driveways to reach their gates.

This is because the stormwater drain, found at the corner of Piercy and Rhodes avenues, has been blocked for years.

“We have called the metro countless times and still nothing gets done,” explained one of the street’s residents, who wished to remain anonymous.

“We were told that the metro does not have the money available to resolve the issue.

“As residents, we are tired of having to live with this problem.”

Sand, rocks and fallen leaves block the drain with residents reporting that on occasion even sewage flows into and blocks the drain.

“Recently workers from the metro dug trenches across the road from the drain.

“We don’t see how this is going to help, and now pedestrians cannot walk on the pavement,” the resident said.

The GCN sent a query to the metro, but to date had received no response.
