Making a difference in the community

Fairy Godmother Desiree Hartslief makes delicious pancakes to tempt the taste buds at the Fairy Godmothers’ Community Market.

Desiree Hartslief, Jenny Buchler, Yvonne and Dawn Dalgety are four women determined to make a difference in their community.

“While interacting with the Primrose community we began to notice that many residents are going hungry.

“While there are many reasons for this, one of the most common reasons is that the salaries these households bring in are just not enough to cover all their expenses.

“The four of us decided we needed to do something about this and the Fairy Godmothers was born, in the hope that we could do something to help those families who are trying but just can’t make it due to circumstances beyond their control,” explained Desiree.

Though the team focuses on feeding those in need, they also help with clothing, baby goods and other household items that are desperately needed by the families they support.

“Sadly the demand for help outweighs the supply and though we are incredibly thankful for all the donations we receive, we often need to take food out of our own cupboards to make up our food hampers,” Desiree said.

While brainstorming ways to raise money to support their project, the Fairy Godmothers decided to host a monthly community market.

“We started hosting the monthly market as a means to keep our charity hampers going out,” explained Desiree.

“This way the community helps to feed the community without actually feeling it.”

The markets, held on the first Sunday of the month at the Sunnyridge Primary School sports grounds from 10am to 3pm, boast a variety of different stalls, including delicious food and drinks stalls and entertainment for children.

A nominal entrance fee is charged to enter the venue which goes directly to the Fairy Godmothers’ feeding scheme.

“Where can families go on a Sunday without leaving our ‘Rose’?

“The market offers a fun morning out, all in aid of helping the community,” Desiree said.

The Fairy Godmothers hope that the community market will grow bigger each month but this can only happen with the community’s support.

“We can only succeed if we are supported by the very community we feed.

“So please pop down to one of our markets and grab a bite to eat, a bargain or two and enjoy a day out in Primrose,” Desiree urged.

If you would like more information or want to get involved in the community market or the Fairy Godmothers and their projects call Desiree on 084 036 2575.

The next market will be held on June 3 from 10am to 3pm at the Sunnyridge Primary School sports grounds in Coronation Drive.
