Southern Stars ready to bring victory home

A game of baseball is played by two teams, made up of nine players, on a baseball field, under the watchful eye of between three and six umpires.

Germiston’s Southern Stars Baseball Club has stepped up to the home plate to represent the city in the Senior Reserve League.

The club was established in 2010 by president and founder Darren Peterson, in memory of the late Ron Peterson, who often used the Southern Star as a reference point in most topics of conversation.

Peterson has been involved with South African baseball from the tender age of eight, driven by the passion of his grandfather Ian Henderson who played in the major league for the Wonderers Giants in the mid-1950s at the Wanderers Stadium, and his grandmother Dorothy Henderson who started the South African Baseball Scorers Association.

“Our humble, nomadic beginnings finally led us to the Germiston City Sports Club, which we have called home since 2013.

“Since finding our home, the Southern Stars have grown from strength to strength with our minor league team ending in second place in the league in 2016 – missing the win by just one run.

“The club celebrated another second place in the league last year,” said Peterson.

The club aims to provide a well-organised, outstanding and educational athletic environment that can accommodate any level of play from beginners to professionals.

“We offer a high-quality experience, which simply is an experience where every athlete is coached using the principals of positive coaching and has fun playing the game.

“In addition to learning the skills, tactics and strategies of the game and improving as a player, we believe each player should feel like an important part of the team regardless of their performance, and that they each learn life lessons that have value beyond the playing field,” said Peterson.

The club is looking to expand and is encouraging players from eight years old to seniors to come and join the club.

The Southern Stars kicked off their Senior Reserve League campaign in May and have celebrated several wins placing them fourth on the log standings.

The club will play host to the Roodepoort-based Cobras Baseball Club at the Germiston City Sports Club on June 17, with the first pitch at 10am.
