Germiston crime stats show increase in drug-related crime

Crime stats released.

The national 2017/2018 crime statistics were released by the Minister of Police Bheki Cele on Tuesday.

The figures released were for the period April 2017 to March 2018.

The GCN takes a look at some of the statistics for the police stations covering the Germiston area.

Once again drug-related crime showed an increase at all three of the stations, while murder showed an increase in the Germiston Police Station’s policing area, a decrease in the Elsburg policing district and the figure remained unchanged in the Primrose area.

The Germiston Police Station was also named in the Top 30 police stations for robbery of cash in transit (two cases were reported as opposed to one from the same period last year) and for truck hijacking (14 cases as opposed to 16 from the same period last year).

Elsburg Police Station:

Murder: 12 (a 25 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 16).

Sexual offences: 58 (a 13.7 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 51).

Attempted murder: 36 (an 89.5 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 19).

Rape: 45 (a 28.6 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 35).

Sexual assault: 12 (a zero per cent increase from the same period last year which was also 12).

Carjacking: 48 (a 37.1 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 35).

Robbery at residential premises: 52 (a 36.6 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 82).

Robbery at non-residential premises: 63 (an 8.6 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 58).

Burglary at non-residential premises: 177 (an 11.9 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 201).

Burglary at residential premises: 373 (a three per cent increase from the same period last year which was 362).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle: 141 (a 25 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 188).

Drug-related crime: 237 (a 22.2 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 194).

Germiston Police Station:

Murder: 55 (a 25 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 44).

Sexual offences: 74 (a 10.8 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 83).

Attempted murder: 53 (a 23.3 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 43).

Rape: 53 (a 14.5 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 62).

Sexual assault: 15 (a three per cent increase from the same period last year which was also 12).

Carjacking: 74 (a 6.3 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 79).

Robbery at residential premises: 59 (a 13.5 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 52).

Robbery at non-residential premises: 63 (a 38.8 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 103).

Burglary at non-residential premises: 249 (a 48.7 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 485).

Burglary at residential premises: 451 (a 22.2 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 580).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle: 280 (a 9.1 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 308).

Drug-related crime: 829 (a 52.4 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 544).

 

Primrose Police Station:

Murder: 45 (a zero per cent increase from the same period last year which was 45).

Sexual offences: 56 (a 1.8 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 57).

Attempted murder: 33 (a 19.5 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 41).

Rape: 48 (a 17.1 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 41).

Sexual assault: 5 (a 58.3 per cent increase from the same period last year which was also 12).

Carjacking: 39 (a 15.2 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 46).

Robbery at residential premises: 35 (a 7.9 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 38).

Robbery at non-residential premises: 23 (an 11.5 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 26).

Burglary at non-residential premises: 68 (a 32.7 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 101).

Burglary at residential premises: 306 (a 1.9 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 312).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle: 167 (a 5.1 per cent decrease from the same period last year which was 176).

Drug-related crime: 451 (a 42.7 per cent increase from the same period last year which was 316).
